Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary science that is located in the joint chapter of chemistry, physics and mechanics. The purpose of this field is to study the structure of materials at the microscopic, nano, atomic, and electron scales to establish a link between structure and material properties to improve material properties, develop novel materials, develop and design raw material production processes and engineering products. The field today covers the study of a wide range of engineering materials such as polymers, semiconductors, ceramics, metals, composites, soft and biological materials, minerals and minerals.
Department Materials Science and Engineering of the Sharif University of Technology was established in 1966 under the name of the Faculty of Metallurgical Engineering. The college's activities were primarily focused on studying metal materials. In line with the development of engineering knowledge and industrial needs of the country to research and train non-metallic materials specialists, the Faculty of Metallurgy is gradually expanding its facilities, manpower and scope to cover a wider range of engineering materials, in addition to metals, development. In 2001, the College was renamed to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
Currently, Department of Materials Science and Engineering accepts undergraduate students and graduate students through national exams (KONKUR) in branches of materials extraction, biomaterials, welding, corrosion and coating, ceramics, metal shaping, materials characterization and selection, metal casting and nanomaterials. In addition, Sharif University of Technology's International Campus also admits undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Department of Nanomaterials Engineering and Materials Science through a nationwide and no-exam (doctoral) program.
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering currently has 24 full-time faculty members who teach and research in the aforementioned branches. There are now over 200 undergraduate and more than 150 undergraduate students at the college.
